Minutes of meeting May 2008

NEWTOWN AREA RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

HELD 22 MAY 2008 AT WESLEY ROAD CLUB AT 8:00PM

Attendance:, Fran Markotic (Chair), Nicola Horrell (Minutes), Cllr Graham Hedley (WWDC & TTC) , Cllr Clive Blackmore (TTC), Lisa Etherton, Mary Beer, Joan & Eddy Smith, Mary Carter, Stewart & Eunja Palmen, Hilly Prendergast, Sue Gibbs, Di Marshall

Apologies: Claudia Hodds, James Crompton, Emma Glover, James Taylor, Maryrose Mantle .

FM welcomed the newcomers and explained what the Association was for.
The minutes of last month’s meeting were read and agreed:

GH clarified that the double yellow lines had simply been repainted over old ones. Wardens will be giving warnings initially, rather than tickets. If anyone has a problem with where they are, they should make a diagram of how they think it should be and send to Cllr Jeff Osborn at WWDC. There was also comment about the recent gully and drain cleaning which had been happening this week throughout Newtown. Most residents were cooperative, although Avenue Road was not able to be cleaned properly due to residents leaving their cars in the road.

FM asked for a volunteer to put together a display for the Community Spotlight event on 28/29 June, using the board made by Drew for the West Wilts show last year. Mary Beer & Hilly Prendergast volunteered and her daughter has agreed to take some photos for this. FM to contact them to discuss what would be appropriate.

Emma Glover sent details of Recycle Swoosh, a competition to discover which shops in Trowbridge are displaying the green reusable Recycle for Wiltshire jute bags. There are prizes and the idea is to encourage more recycling. The meeting was reminded that there is a bring site at the Ship Inn on Frome Road which will take cardboard and plastic bottles and Emma has asked that this information is provided in the next newsletter. GH advised that it is likely that in 2010, we will be charged for green recycling and that hopefully by 2011 there will be collections of cardboard & plastic which is already happening in Salisbury.

The police initiative of providing a dance evening for teenagers – “Blues and Zoos” is going very well and they have had their 3rd event.

Front Garden Fiesta – no prizes had yet been found. MC suggested a raffle at meetings to raise money to buy some, but this was rejected on the grounds that not enough people came to the meetings. However, we do have some funds and it may be that we will purchase necessary prizes if donated ones are unavailable. James (ex-Palmer Gardening centre, now in Holt) was suggested as a possible donor, as was Palmer GC. We also hope that the carboot sale will raise a healthy sum which can be used as well. A date for judging and who will judge has yet to be set.

Civic Certificate – NARA was awarded one by the Town Council for services to the community.

BA14 Cultural Fayre – Will be held at Arc Theatre 5th June 7:00pm. This is a chance for cultural groups to network.

Merlin Database – NARA has registered for 2008/2009 – this is a County Council run website giving details of all groups in the area.

Carboot and Table Top Sale – 29th June – Brian Francis has put together a poster/flyer , but some additions were suggested and FM will undertake to do this, get them photocopied and distributed to deliverers; the flyers should be distributed to residents by 14th June. Posters will be emailed so that anyone who can can put them in churches, schools, shops, etc. FM also suggested we ought to ensure that those residents who use the Club’s car park normally will need to be advised a day or so before that there will be a Carboot sale there so they can vacate it. Joan Smith will do this on Friday 27th in the evening and Nicola Horrell will do it again on Saturday night. NH will also phone Wiltshire Times to advertise the event 2 weeks before. Lisa Etherton will create a banner to put on the wall outside the carpark to be put up on Saturday night. Due to churchgoers using the carpark on Sunday morning, sellers can only come in from 12:30pm, and the event will start at 1:00pm. NH and LE will collect fees of £3 from the vendors.

AGM 2008 - FM suggested we have this in September and this was agreed.

There was no further business and the meeting closed at 8:45pm
